UrbanLeap Project Milestone
The UrbanLeap consortium is proud to announce a significant milestone in the promotion and education of parkour: the publication of the Parkour Trainer Handbook. This 191-page document serves as the main intellectual output of a collaborative effort among seven partner organizations across four European countries, resulting in a comprehensive resource intended for parkour coaches, educators, and sports organizations.
Features of the Parkour Trainer Handbook
The handbook synthesizes scientific research and practical coaching methodologies into a singular accessible format. Developed under the Erasmus+ sport cooperation partnership (project no. 101185120), this handbook builds upon extensive scientific reviews and expert surveys conducted during the project’s earlier phases. The six core chapters cover a wide range of topics essential to parkour training and coaching.
Comprehensive Topics Covered
Each chapter addresses crucial aspects of parkour training:
Introduction to Parkour: Tracing its origins and growth within formal sport structures.
Educational and Psychological Dimensions: Exploring the cognitive and emotional benefits of parkour.
Long-term Athlete Development: Providing age-specific guidance based on developmental science.
Technical Training Framework: Covering biomechanics and progressive skill enhancement.
The Coach as Facilitator: Defining the role of trainers in athlete development and decision-making.
Competition Judging: Guiding evaluators on performance assessment in skills and speed formats.
The synthesis of these elements not only enhances the understanding of parkour but also aims to elevate its status within the sporting community, advocating for its inclusion in educational environments and formal competitions.
As articulated in the handbook, "Parkour teaches you to be sure of what you are able to do — not what you dream to be able to do." This philosophy encapsulates the discipline's fundamental role in personal development and skill acquisition, fostering both physical and psychological growth in practitioners.
The UrbanLeap project's commitment to developing evidence-based training programs is now embodied in this handbook, making it an invaluable resource for anyone invested in the future of parkour coaching and education. With its collaborative foundation and thorough research, the Parkour Trainer Handbook is set to become a cornerstone for advancing parkour within the realm of sports education.
